How Do I Change the Static IP Address of the Promira Serial Platform on a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X High Sierra?
Rena Ayeras

Question from the Customer:

I am using multiple Promira Serial Platforms. To more easily identify and control the multiple transactions, I want to change the static addresses. Can you provide the details of how to make those changes? I am using a MacBook Pro laptop with Mac OS X High Sierra. I tried the instructions provided in the Control Center Serial Software User Manual, but I haven’t been able to make it work. For me, the input fields for the IP Addresses in the Network Preferences dialog are greyed out.  Can you provide the details I need to make this change?

Response from Technical Support:

Thank you for your question! For most setups, the Control Center Serial Software User Manual, section Configuring Network Preferences provides all the necessary information. We are providing additional information for your setting up with the Mac OS X High Sierra. First, we’ll start with an overview about the IP addresses.

Overview of Promira Serial Platform IP Addresses

The default network preferences of the Promira Serial Platform for Ethernet is static: its IP address is fixed and the default address is 192.168.11.1. This IP address can only be changed when the Promira platform is connected via Ethernet. If you try to change the IP address when the Promira platform is connected via Ethernet-over-USB, the result would be a local address: 10.x.x.x

In most cases, you can follow the directions as provided in the Control Center Serial Software User Manual, section Configuring Network Preferences. Using a MacBook requires a few additional steps.

Instructions for Changing the IP Address with a MacBook

  1. Launch the Control Center Serial Software.
  2. Connect the Promira platform using both the Ethernet cable and the USB Micro-B cable.
  3. In the Control Center Serial Software GUI, select Adapter -> Connect.
  4. Connect the Promira platform with a local IP address, such as 10.1.4.85.
  5. Modify the static IP address and the subnet mask, in Adapter -> Network Preferences -> Manually. The IP address can be any numbers for a peer-to-peer setting. Ensure the IP address you select does not conflict with the IP address of any other device.
  6. Open System Preferences on your MacBook and navigate to Network. Find the Ethernet adapter to which the Promira platform is connected and perform the below operations:

    1. Change Using DHCP to Manually.
    2. For example, set the IP Address to 192.168.11.2.  Select another number for last digit of IP address of the Promira platform.  For example, if the IP address of the Promira platform is x.y.z.a, then the IP address of the MacBook should be x.y.z.b
    3. Set the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0.
  7. Re-open the Control Center Serial Software and disconnect the Promira platform.  Then re-connect by clicking Adapter -> Connect. The Promira platform now appears with 2 IP addresses: Ethernet and Ethernet-over-USB. You can also power up the Promira platform using an external power adapter.
