Support Question of the Week: VBUS Power Measurement and Triggering Capabilities of the Beagle 480 Power Protocol Analyzer
Rena

The Beagle 480 Power Protocol Analyzer, an addition to the Total Phase equipment portfolio, provides high performance cost-effective real-time analysis, current and voltage monitoring, plus the option of advanced state-based triggering.  These features enable correlating USB data transactions with current and voltage measurements. Such trouble-shooting techniques can help identify and locate excess power consumption, which can lead to optimizing the code and circuitry for a more efficient USB embedded design.

  • The Beagle USB 480 Power analyzer captures both USB data and power measurements in real time. The 256 MB hardware buffer can capture larger pre-trigger volumes of data.
  • The advanced (optional) state-based trigger system with eight non-sequential states and six data matches per state, is similar to the technology of the Beagle USB 5000 v2 analyzer series.

Figure 2 shows an example of a power measurement, which can be viewed with Data Center Software.

  • The red trace of Figure 2 indicates voltage.
  • The blue trace indicates current.

There are two versions of the Beagle 480 Power Protocol Analyzer: Standard and Ultimate Edition. Both versions provide the following:

Current/Voltage Monitor

  • Real-time graphing of VBUS current and voltage values
  • Interactive and bi-directional correlation of current/voltage values with USB data
High-Performance HW Buffer

  • 256 MB capacity
  • Large circular buffer

In addition, the Ultimate Edition of the Beagle USB 480 Power Protocol Analyzer provides:

USB 2.0 Advanced Triggering Capabilities

  • Create state-based and flexible trigger conditions based on data patterns, packet types, error types, events, and other criteria
  • Hardware packet filtering
  • Up to eight independent states and six matches per state for USB 2.0 captures
  • Digital inputs and outputs to synchronize with oscilloscopes or logic analyzers
